This has been sitting on my computer for a while now. I thought I would upload it. It's an interior illustration for Clockhaven Chronicles.

Imagining how light and shadows fall has been fun. This piece was a great learning experience.

I shot a couple of ref pictures for the pose and I laughed my head off at the fact that my husband couldn't hold a serious expression whilst threatening a teddy bear with a knife. =D

Those cutlasses!!!:DThis light! This uniform!!*faints*
I absolutely love bad guy's expression and the wrinkle. How do you draw these cutlasses? I mean..I never seem to be able to draw "straight" - as in continous- lines. Mines are just so wobbly when I draw on CS4. Do you use some tool? I know there is one that helps that, but I can't find it anywhere- you know, when you drag a line so it comes slightly curved?

Why thank you! Actually the trick to drawing any line or curve is to do it in small strokes and build up the shape. Mine are always rough to begin with and then over time I refine the shape. Using the eraser along the way also helps to get rid of bumps. The biggest thing to remember when doing swords is to keep in mind your perspective. A lot of people draw swords from one angle, perfectly from the side. It doesn't have thickness or recede into the background and thus it doesn't look as realistic. The pen tool can be used for curved shapes and such but it takes some getting used to. It also sticks out as the edge is super sharp compared to everything else so I tend to stay away from it if I can. It's right above the Type tool in the tool menu on the left.
