In a land far far away by lithriel In a land far far away by lithriel
I took my sweet time with this one. With this piece I have learned that there's a whole new world of illustration possibilities open to you once you know the fundamentals of light.

Sorry I didn't see this comment sooner. Obnoxiously huge. Lol, all my files usually are. Probably 500MB at least.

Well I am not sure I would be legally able to do that. I guess if you have the copyright to it perhaps. Right now I am have a full schedule until October though. Hope you find somebody!

Ooo, I can't wait to see it myself! I don't have a subscription and I live in the US so I get them a month after they come out. Just curious, was I just a forum winner or was this image of the month? Thanks.

It was a forum winner, but the next largest image after the image of the month. A month to wait? thats a wait...after i saw the second issue I subscribed as I was to impatient to try and wait for the shops!
Congrats on the win with the pic - it's great!

The perspective in this piece is really nice, I must say. And the lighting is just brilliant, with a light source behind the character. Don't see that very often. I hope you don't mind me featuring this in my journal ^^

This is amazing!!

You should consider putting together a tutorial on light and how it affects color--I think that's one of the hardest things for artists to understand and use (I know it is for me!).

The details on the dragon are so precise, and the composition overall is just lovely. Thanks for sharing!!

light studying-- one important thing in all art
but I'm not quite getting the "why" on the from face of the dragon, as in, the scale that are seemly far beyond the reach of sunlight

Huh? Not sure what you are saying. But if you are referring to the light shining from the other side, that is called atmospheric lighting. It occurs when a bright sky's overall tones appear all around an object because of the clouds and atmosphere in the sky. It causes reflected light, in this case blue, to be seen even on the opposite side of the dragon. If it were night, the opposite side would be nothing but black.

And your comment rings so true. Only very recently I've been trying to do proper studies of light and I absolutely regret not doing it earlier.
Congratulations on a wonderful piece. (:

Holy smokes! What a brilliant piece! I really like the light filtering through the membrane of the dragon's wing. And the detail work on the dragon's scales is gorgeous. Not to mention that the skyscape provides a palpable sense of depth and movement. Though I dare say, bare thighs on a saddle? That'll be some serious chafing. ;) I do like her sword, by the way.
